Built in 1871, Shinkoro Clock Tower located in the town center of Izushi Castle Town is known for being the oldest Japanese-style clock tower in the world.
Originally, this clock tower had no mechanical clock. Instead, drummers up in the tower keep would bang their drums to notify locals of the time.
Then, in 1881, a local doctor donated a mechanical clock to Shinkoro. After being nursed back to health from his local patients, the doctor was so moved by their kindness that the clock was his thank you to the town.
A pond at the clock tower’s base is home to an array of stunning koi fish waiting to be fed by passersby. Food can be bought at the nearby shops.
The scenery surrounding Shinkoro is perhaps Izushi’s most popular spot for kimono photoshoots.
