Become a woodworking craftsman for a day in Izushi and learn about the intricate process of Kumiko.
What is Kumiko?
Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which pieces of wood are assembled together without the use of nails.
Kumiko gained popularity since its birth in the Asuka period (710-794) and is still known as a delicate and beautiful craft that combines fine pieces of wood into geometric patterns.
Under the guidance of a master kumiko craftsman, create your own kumiko design with pre-cut pieces of wood.
Guests can create either a one-sided kumiko creation, a two-sided creation, or a four-sided creation which can be used as the base for a candle lantern.
In addition to the help of the craftsman, an English instruction sheet will be given to each woodworking participant.

- SCHEDULE
(Some times may differ) -
・Meet at Ito Crafts
・Begin activity, assemble wooden pieces and let craftsman glue on paper (30 mins-1 hour depending on plan)
・Wait for kumiko glue to dry (approx. 1.5 hours), walk around Izushi
・Return to Ito Crafts to pick up dried kumiko
・End of activity
