Otagaki Shiro Museum

Meet The Man Behind The Ropeway

A tiny building sits right beside the Kinosaki Ropeway entrance, housing a free museum documenting the life and achievements of Otagaki Shiro, the first president of Kansai Eelectric Power. Originally from Kinosaki, Mister Shiro used his success and wealth to fund construction of the Kinosaki Ropeway as a means of helping the further development of his hometown.

Once the ropeway was completed in 1963, tourists and locals alike flocked to the ropeway for a chance to gaze upon Kinosaki Onsen from the top of Mount Daishi (now recognized as a Michelin-starred scenic view).

As a special thanks to Mister Shiro for building such a successful attraction for his hometown, in 2000 the Otagaki Shiro Museum was opened to the public, along with a refurbished ropeway gondola.

Inside, visitors can watch a documentary-style video about Mister Shiro’s life (available in Japanese) while also appreciating the open-window view of Kinosaki below.
