The main building of the former residence is designed in a traditional machiya-style layout with a mise, a nakanoma, and a tatami room. The absence of walls in favor of sliding doors to separate the rooms is another characteristic of machiya-style architecture.
With a Japanese garden in the center, visitors can also view historical documents and items related to Izushi during a walk through the main building, annex, and storehouse.

The Izushi History Museum is housed in the former residence of the Fukutomi family, a wealthy merchant family who traded raw silk and cast metal products.
In 1876, a huge fire razed Izushi, destroying two-thirds of the town. The main building of the Izushi History Museum was reconstructed in 1912, and the annex in 1892.
