Kitamae ships were trading vessels active from the 1600s to the 1800s, setting sail from Hokkaido and transporting goods to ports around Japan.

Takeno, a fishing village 1 train stop from Kinosaki Onsen, was one of the trading stops along the Kitamae ship route, and the townspeople still commemorate this history today.

Festival-goers are can also stop into the Kitamaekan building to see a 1/5 scale model of a Kitamae ship!
