Discover Takeno - a historic trading port on the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark coast

Once a thriving hub of the for Japan's Kitamae trading ships, Takeno flourished during the during the 1600s-1800s. While the bustling trade ships have passed into history, Takeno has transformed into a serene fishing village renowned for its crystal-clear waters. Discover this hidden gem on the Sea of Japan just 20 minutes from Kinosaki Onsen!

Meet your guide/driver at Kinosaki Onsen Station and drive to Takeno. Your knowledgeable local guide will lead you through the enchanting, narrow passages of Takeno's "yakisugi" (charred cedar wood) homes. These homes are not painted, but burnt using a centuries-old method to strengthen the wood surface from strong sea winds.

Step inside Tanaka-tei, the historic residence of a prominent ship-owning family, to enjoy refreshing tea and light snacks. After a short break, drive to the coast to view Hasakari Rock, a fascinating natural formation. Hasakari is local dialect that roughly translates to “stuck” or “to be wedged between.” The three rocks used to be one large rock with a cave that had been eroded by the waves. Further erosion caused the upper part of the cave to collapse and become stuck, creating the current natural art formation.

Walk along the San'in Kaigan UNESCO Global Geopark trail and experience the breathtaking landscape millennia have shaped before driving with your guide back to Kinosaki Onsen.
