The annual Nobori Mawashi ceremony will be held on May 5 at Izushi Shrine!

Nobori Mawashi, also known as “banner waving,” is a legendary ceremony with a long-respected history in modern-day Toyooka City.

According to legend, Amenohiboko, an ancient prince, lived in the Tajima Region (where modern-day Toyooka City is located). It is said that during a time when the region was engulfed at the bottom of a muddy pool, Amenohiboko cut out a rocky slab in modern-day Hiyoriyama before returning to his palace with a large streamer. On May 5 each year, local boys dress in traditional Shinto religous garb and wave streamers with various designs in commemoration of the legend. Offerings are also made by individuals dressed in Noh theater attire.
