Kita Mae ships were trading vessels that were active from the Edo period to the Meiji era (1600s-1800s), setting sail from Hokkaido and transporting goods to ports around Japan. Takeno was one of the stops along the Kita Mae route, and the townspeople still commemorate this history today.
Festival-goers are encouraged to stop into the Kitamaekan building to see a 1/5 scale model of a Kita Mae ship.
